1. Pick a good routeMake sure whatever hike you go on isn't too strenuous. The hike we took on Roque Nublo had numerous reviews of kids, old folks, and pregnant women going on it. Since I'm relatively fit, we figured I would be more than okay with this route. 2. Wear supportive shoesYou don't want your ankle to give out or to lose your footing over a rocky area. Make sure you have plenty of support. 3. Pack wellPregnancy hunger can strike at any moment. Better to be prepared with snacks and juices to stay energized, especially if you plan on hiking under the sun. 4. Wear layersWe all know our internal thermostat is a bit bonkers when we're pregnant. One second you're freezing in the shade, but in the sun you're about to have heat exhaustion. Wear layers to satisfy all the many weather changes your body my experience. 5. Exercise cautionDon't forget you're not as athletic as you once were. You have a new center of balance. When climbing or taking big steps, make sure you have good footing, something to grab onto (if possible), or have a spotter behind you. 6. Take a buddyDon't go it alone! God-forbid something bad happens, it's always safer to have someone with you. Hiking is amazing exercise to work your legs, glutes, and heart. Don't be intimidated to participate while you're pregnant! Just make sure to take a step back and take care of yourself.
